Hacking Nature

The Microsoft Lobby Cube is a digital installation that seamlessly integrates architecture and space. Alongside global architects Gensler, we were tasked to reimagine the lobby spaces inside two atriums of Microsoft's Redmond campus. Our role was to integrate a content experience that engaged employees and visitors in an emotional way.

Our concept for this experience was titled Strata, based on the theme of the natural layers that span from within the earth to the sky and atmosphere around us. Each layer of the Strata is dynamically generated based on a custom particle system that forms a unique environment inspired by a specific layer in the strata.

A Microsoft Kinect sensor detects people's motions as they flow through the space causing shifts and swells within each strata. In addition, a custom generative audio system creates an ever shifting audio landscape, using sounds captured in the Pacific Northwest. This blend of interaction gives each visitor a unique audio visual experience as they traverse the floors of the building through the cube.
